Watchlist: all Ghibli movies
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
When I was teaching piano a few days ago, I heard someone playing a familiar piece in the room next to mine. It sounded so familiar, but I couldn't figure out what it was. It took me like 5-10 mins to finally figure it out. (I tried to remember it during the lesson lol) It was Joe Hisaishi's One Summer's Day from Spirited Away. Ahhh... I love that piece. I can't believe I couldn't recognize it right away. Maybe it's because I haven't listened to it in a very long time. So I listened to it on youtube when I got home. I have this habit of scrolling the comments when a youtube video only has audio. So I read the comments while I hummed along to the tunes, and I was so surprised to find out that the Spirited Away's animator died last May. I didn't know how I missed this news, but it was so sad. Spirited Away is one of my favorite animated movies. The animation is so beautiful, especially the one where Chihiro was going to the sixth station. It's A+, and forever my favorite. And apparently she was also the animator of some other Ghibli movies. Since all Ghibli movies have gorgeous animations, I believe this is such a huge loss, for them and also for us.
I actually haven't watched a lot of Ghibli movies. I know, it's a shame. I've only ever watched Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Ponyo. And I only got to watch Ponyo few years ago, when the kid I babysat was watching it. I blame my parents for not introducing me to more Ghibli movies. They only made me watch Disney movies. While Disney is also great, it's not the same as Ghibli. Ghibli has better stories and animations. I like that the stories revolve around a little girl and there's no romance involved. Meanwhile, Disney loves princess stories. It's always about a princess falling in love with a prince. Like Danny from The Mindy Project said, they wouldn't even have a story without their princes (except for maybe like 2-3 of them). I like Pixar movies tho. When I was in middle school, my older brother told me to just watch Pixar movies because their movies always have good storylines unlike the other Disney studios. And I think he's right.
I've been seeing a lot of Ghibli posts on tumblr. Almost all of them seem so sad and/or hit too close to home. So I intend to watch every one of them. I'm thinking of starting with Hayao Miyazaki's movies first. (Btw, I'm still not over his retirement) I have Howl's Moving Castle downloaded, but I haven't got a chance to watch it. I'm so surprised that KimuTaku is one of the voice actors. Because when I was reading the wikipedia pages of Ghibli movies, I didn't recognize any of the voice actors, except a very few of them. But I really didn't expect to see KimuTaku's name there. I guess it's because the image of him as a drama king is still so strong in my head lol. Anyway, I'm not sure when I'm gonna finish this watchlist. They have a total of 20-ish movies. So I still have a long long way to go.

Disney have good animations, but Idk Ghibli is other level. However Mulan, not a princess, is a gem. She totally owns the men and save China. I hope someday I can make her to see :P she needs to see the light.
I wish I could buy all Ghibli's dvd. Sometimes we can't have all lol
I love The Tale of the princess Kaguya, Tonari no Totoro and Spirited Away (I need to re-watch the last one)
Mai Mai Miracle / Maimai Shinko to sennen no mahō is a nice animation. It's not Ghibli made. But, the guy who produce this animation worked at the Ghibli Studios. So, it's a tip to see another japanese animation.

I really wanna watch the tale of princess kaguya. I saw that the animation was done with watercolor(?). At first, I thought it was just a really great fan art. It looked really beautiful tho. I can't wait to watch it.
And thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely put mai mai miracle on my watchlist :-)

Sometimes Disney makes good characters, but the story stays flat. Merinda is cool and all that, but i found the story weak. The same thing I could say about The Princess and the Frog. Frozen, i found Ana funny. Still it's not a movie to watch multiple times. It's good movie nevertheless.
Another one that's overrated is Inside Out. I liked the concept, the idea behind, but after a time it got boring. However if you haven't watched check Zootopia from Disney. It's worth 'cause of social nuances. This movie is popular with adults.
I like to collect animations dvds/blu-ray now. I wish I would have bought more when I was younger. At the same time I didn't have much money to spent back then XD I wanna show all what's good to my future nieces or nephews.

I think Brave has a pretty good storyline. The Princess and the Frog is really bad though. I fell asleep halfway through. But I think the songs are great. Almost There is one of my favorite Disney songs.
Inside Out is good, but not THAT good like people say. I find it very funny tho, but I don't think the kids will get the humor. Only teens and adults will get it. And some of my friends said that Joy is annoying. I kinda understand what they meant. Joy is my least favorite among the emotions.
I've also been watching a lot of animated movies since last year. I bought some of my favorites on iTunes, and downloaded some off the internet. It's kinda a weird experience rewatching my favorite childhood movies as an adult.

I think I am the same. When I was a kid I loved Mulan and The Lion King. Now I think I would only add Zootopia. Princesses was not really into. My taste didn't change much. Not Disney, but Anastasia is a princess i liked it.
Idk if kids wouldn't get Inside Out. Nowadays children know a lot. They have so much accessible. Different from my time XD I found Joy so annoying in the beginning. Then I stopped 'cause I was being too negative. And sadness got at my nerves lol That's why the most important is to have a balance :P Totally forgot Brave's plot. I just didn't like it. I enjoyed Ratatouille even thought it's not popular.
I need to buy The Princess and The Frog for my collection. I'm lazy for watching movies on pc
I wish I had seen all ghibli movies. I need to look for some. I haven't seen Ponyo for example.
I watched: Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Kaguya, When Marnie was there, Tonari no Totoro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, The Cat Returns, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away and The Wind Rises.
I have Porco Rosso too. But, I didn't see it. You should really watch Kaguya.
When Marnie was there is western friendly. I liked a lot and I think it's based on some novel. My neighbor Totoro is so cute. It's a must to see. Kiki is great too. A good option to see with kids or teens. There's even a live action.
I love princess mononoke too. It's a great movie. If you haven't it should be at the top list. This one is more heavy. Now Grave of the Fireflies's real. It affects you. It's a war drama. The Cat Returns is good, not great and light. The Wind Rises is Jiro Horikoshi's biography. It has historic and technical stuff. This one is more mature/ adult.
I don't think I can pinpoint one favorite. Maybe Kaguya, Princess Mononoke, Totoro, Spirited Away too hard to choose

Anastasia is also one of my favorites. I just rewatched it a couple months ago. And I still love it.
No, I mean the kids don't really get the jokes in it. Because when I watch it with kids, they don't understand what's funny about things that are funny to most teens and adults. They get the movie, but not the jokes. Oh, I also love ratatouille! I guess we have a similar taste :-)
Btw why haven't you seen Porco Rosso if you have it?
Omg there's a live action of Kiki? This is news to me. I've watched the animated one and love it. I need to look it up.
I heard that grave of the fireflies was really sad. My friends said I need to prepare myself for a heartbreak if I watch it. And I've seen people saying the wind rises is the worst Hayao Miyazaki's work. Well, I can't judge until I watch it.

That's why sometimes the movies that kids love are different from the ones that adults do. Kids love Cars and adults don't care about this one. The 1st is alright, but hated the 2nd.
Ratatouille is underrated!
To tell you the truth I forgot to watch Porco Rosso lol
I remind myself with this talk. I bought Studio Ghibli's boxes. So, in one go i had many to see. I watched one by one slowly. Then I forgot the last one, as you get busy with real life you forget to check the dvds. But, I did see already. It's good has a serious subject, but it's a light movie. I liked the characters, their traits. But, I don't want to spoil much. You should see this one too
Kiki live action I saw recently on a community lj. I will grab and see it.
Yes, Grave of the Fireflies is sad. At the end I was depressed. But, I did not cry. It's a sad situation in the movie and makes you grateful for your present. People are harsh. Wind Rises is good, it's not the 1st in favorites Ghibli's movie categories. But, I would watch again. It's beautiful movie. You learn about history a little bit. Not always we gonna love ghibli's movie.

I think I'll watch Kiki live action too. But I don't really have a high expectation of it. Live actions are usually pretty bad. But I still watch them because I'm curious to see how they make the adaptations.
I wonder if it's subbed. Do you mind telling me the community you saw it on?
Woah I'm a little surprised that you didn't cry watching grave of the fireflies. People say it kinda tops the tearjerker list.
no subject
I have the other titles in singles dvd with the exception of The Wind Rises in blu-ray because I found in the store by accident. So, I had to buy. I live in a small city I can't waste this kinda of opportunity :D
I'll pm the link. The description says english subtittle.
I'm not a reference in this. I don't cry often watching sad videos. I am going to say this I cried with 1 Liter of Tears a lot, but I have my reasons of why.
no subject
Yeah, 1 liter of tears was a complete tearjerker. I don't usually cry watching dramas, but I couldn't not cry watching that one. It was just too sad :(

Just won the princess and the pilot dvd, an japanese animarion. I'm so happy. In the reality I won a gift card for my birthday. I picked the dvd and others things. I liked the movie, simple and nice to see. It's an adventure-romance movie.
It's my addiction dvd, books and mangás. My spend on me money goes to them. I bought all of them through the years. Spirited Away was the 1st.
Just read Orange and I loved <3
no subject
Omg orange was so sad! I cried a lot reading that. Have you watched the live action and anime? They couldn't top the manga, but it was pretty sad too.
no subject
And I still have my others babies: books. They are larger than the mangás and +150 . Another problem. One day I took the clothes of one drawer to put my books. My priorities lol the clothes can be a mess, but my books and mangás no. However clothes can be way more expensive here. So...
Maybe when something it's too different and the title will never brought by the companies. I can read online, specially BL. But it's not an habit. The latest one that i bought was ano hana. It's a bit sad. I haven't finished, but I couldn't help myself and watched the drama or movie. It's good, you should check and/or read, only 3 vol.
I think Orange is one of my favorites mangás now. I watched this week the movie. I think it's a good adaptation. I didn't like the Kakeru actor idk never saw Kakeru in him. But, I liked the girl Naho.
Story-wise I think Suwa is incredible to put his feelings aside. The anime I haven't see. Maybe some time later after i forget things about the story. Or will be too much Orange/sadness. The original work can't be beat. It's better than the movie.
Do you and your brother have the same taste? I'm so different of my sister. The types of books that i buy are different from the ones she picks. Occasionally we read the same ones, but what grabs our attentions are totally not the same.
PS:. mangá without the acute accent it can means mango or sleeve in my native language XD
no subject
There are times when I love the manga so much and would love to buy it, but they don't release it in English. Like Liar Game. I really want to add it to my collection though :(
I think orange anime isn't that good. But still better than the live action. The live action changed some things and I really didn't appreciate the unnecessary changes. And the acting was kind of meh. (And I'm tired of seeing Yamazaki Kento in like every shoujo live action. Like aren't there any other actors available?)
Umm I think we do have a similar taste. My older brother was the one who introduced me to mangas and anime. So back then, I basically only watched/read whatever he was watching/reading. My little brother also just followed me and our older brother along. I mostly read shounen mangas, because I love mystery and detective stories, and that's also what I grew up reading (because of my brothers). I'm not really into romance, so I don't really read a lot of shoujo. So yeah, we kind of have the same taste. It was great, we could take turns to buy mangas instead of buying all myself. I'd be broke lol.

It really is more convenient however here in my country you can't walk at the streets carrying iphone or ipad. Unless you wanna get mugged. Many people were robbed because they're playing pokemon go XD
The 1st mangá bought was The Ring <3 .My favorites mangás are: Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Orange, Nana, Death Note, and Code Geass. I love Code Geass. Have you read it? Which ones are your favorite?
I can read Shoujo. I can read anything I don't like when it's too crazy. I started reading Arakawa Under the Bridge, but i said nope too silly and stupid. Other one that I am annoyed is Usagi Drop the 1st half is fine and nice. But the 2nd I am hating so much. It's nice having someone to talk about mangás. I am alone at that.
no subject
Is it really that bad in Brazil? Like you can't even pick up a call when you're on the street? I think I'd go crazy if I lived there. Besides reading mangas/books on iPhone/iPad, I always listen to iPod when I walk from/to work. If I couldn't do any of that, it would be really boring spending half an hour trip doing nothing.
Some of my favorite mangas are meitantei conan, death note, liar game, the prince of tennis, ansatsu kyoushitsu, boku dake ga inai machi, mirai nikki. There are more, but then it would be a long list lol. You see that it's all shounen? Like I said I mostly read shounen. And since 2-3 years ago, I've started reading Korean webtoon. It's kinda hard to get the translation tho. A lot of my faves are abandoned midway. It sucks, because they're really good. But I just saw that the official English webtoon has finally caught up to the last fan-translated chapter of my fave webtoon (the title is Dr. Frost), so I'm excited to continue reading it again. Have you ever read webtoon? They're pretty good too. If you like mangas, I think you'll like webtoon too.
Oh, that's too bad. Some of my online friends also don't have anyone to talk about Asian stuff. I'm Chinese and I grew up with lots of Asian friends, so I've always had someone to talk about Asian dramas/movies, mangas, anime, and other Asian stuff. But nowadays, you can talk about that with online friends, so it should be better :-)

I know that it sounds bad what i'm gonna say, but it's not a now thing. Since when I was kid I learned to be careful. So, I'm used to it and I have never carried a cellphone when I'm walking on the streets. There's many pickpocket thieves that steal cellphones in my area. But, not every location is crazy dangerous and that you should be paranoiac. And I'll add that I was never mugged until this day. However, I saw one on the streets and I was at my apartment no gun involved.
I think in Rio, Sao Paulo many people walk by foot with their stuff, so you only need to pay attention at what happens near you. And put your things really close to you. That's probably why many foreign tourists are mugged in this country. I don't think it's a problem to use a cellphone when there's a crowd. You also need to be discreet while walking. It's sad to say but you become numb to this type of thing.
Yeah, that's why i like lj and line to have a chat :D Brazil have everything, so mixed ^^ The country with the most Japanese outside of Japan, but in Sao Paulo not my small city. In the past I knew like 2 people that liked Utada. It's easy to spot someone reading mangá like One Piece. People like to brag that Kpop is popular worldwide, but Japanese culture is way more spread in the general public. Sho talked on Vs. Arashi about being recognized in Rio.
This country is so damn big that anyone with similar taste as yours is far away from you.
Never heard of webtoon.
no subject
I actually find it funny that they always find it hard to believe that they're popular outside Japan lol.
no subject
I'm talking about in the broad sense the culture. The music Kpop is more popular in niche, but Japanese culture is more known with the general public imo. We have many Japanese and Chinese restaurants. But no Korean. I can buy more easily Japanese and Chinese Movies DVD. People who looks into bookstore may have a clue what it's mangá = comics. Talking about people who spend hours inside one. I do have a couple of Korean movies in dvd.
Ask about famous asian actors/actress people will say Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Lucy Liu... no Korean. Books? I can only find here Japanese or Chinese writers. And North Koreans writers talking about escaping the country. I'm talking about my perspective in not an asian country in a city with no asian.
The thing is with Jpop you have to know where to look. People are way more scared with copyright. And Japan never cared to get bigger 'cause they don't need and the other... Kpop subs is with the mainstream. I don't think people care about indies, the krock. The Jpop 48/46 and Johnnies have some subs they're the mainstream ones. Unfortunately solo singers are ignored. Subs from drama I don't follow because I'm lazy in watching hahahaha either way it doesn't matter I'm happy that Jpop is smaller because no stupid fights. Some Kpop fans can be tiresome. I prefer this way lol
I know why are they always surprised? They need to travel more lol
